How to Dress for Eid ul Adha Prayer in the UK

Posted by New Arabia on

The Eid ul Adha prayer is the most important part of the day. Thousands of brothers across the UK will gather at mosques and outdoor prayer grounds, and Islamic tradition is clear: wear your best.

What Islam Says

The Prophet (peace be upon him) wore his finest clothes for Eid. He encouraged others to do the same and emphasised cleanliness, fragrance, and grooming before prayer. This is sunnah, and most Muslims in the UK observe it.

There's no single prescribed garment for Eid, but the thobe is the established choice for men across virtually every Muslim community in Britain.

The Thobe

A clean, well-fitted thobe is the right choice for Eid prayer. The Moroccan thobe and the Emirati kandura are the most common styles at UK mosques. White is the traditional colour for morning prayer, though dark colours are perfectly appropriate.

Three things matter:

  • It needs to be freshly pressed and clean
  • The length should sit just above the ankle, not trailing
  • It should be loose enough that you can perform sujood without restriction

Footwear

You'll take your shoes off at the mosque. Choose something easy to slip on and off. Clean socks are non-negotiable. A lot of men wear clean white socks specifically for Eid prayer.

Fragrance

Apply a non-alcoholic fragrance before you leave. Oud and musk are the traditional choices. Our oud collection has options for every preference. Wear it before prayer, not during.

Outdoor Prayer Grounds

Many Eid ul Adha prayers in the UK happen outdoors. June is generally warm but mornings can be cool and unpredictable. A breathable thobe is worth prioritising. Bring a light layer in case the morning is cold, the prayer is early.

After the Prayer

If you have family visits and gatherings through the day, plan ahead. Some men change after morning prayer into a different colour. Others wear the same thobe kept clean. Either works. Lay it out the night before so you're not rushing in the morning.
